grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

Never seen this before. It looks like a fishing net :) Made of what? Rice?

25 Apr 2018 9:35am

@grouser: Rice flour grouser, which has to be dry fried a bit and made into a soft dough with piping hot water. There are plates made of cane and the dough made with the rice flour is squeezed on these plates and steamed. very very healthy and safe for the tummy.

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

When I was on Kovalam beach in the eighties we had a steamed flour dish called putt, It was steamed in pipes and came as a long cylinder which could be crumbled and then combined with either sweet or savoury additions. It was the only place on my trip that I came across it. Do you know this?

25 Apr 2018 1:06pm

@grouser: Of course grouser. The ingredient uis the same rice flour. Now alternate layers of grated coconut and rice flour are filled in the pipe and steamed. I don't use the pipe though I have one. I mix the two ( rice flour and coconut shavings ) together and tie it in a thin cloth; place this on a sieve like vessel and steam it. The taste will be the same. When this is done with the pinkish flour from red rice ( hand pound) the taste is greater! A very very healthy and substantial breakfast :)They make this only in he South of India..and especially in Kerala and Tamilnadu.
