I was stunned!!

Posted by
Devi (Chennai, India) on 10 July 2014 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

This is the Cadamba ( Kadamba) tree inside the Shiva Temple at Karuveli near Kumbakonam .Neolamarckia Cadamba is the Botanical name and Kadamba is the Tamil name. All the Temples have their special trees we refer to as Sthala Vruksha and invariably the trees have curative properties and are considered very Holy..The Holiness is attributed for the safety and propogation of trees. Yes..a tag of holiness goes a long way in conservation of the eco system....whether it is a plant or an animal:)
This tree grows to a height of more than 128 feet, it is said. The flowers are in clusters like a ball and have a sweet fragrance. The flowers drop and the fruit ripens. I was able to take a few shots of the tree with flowers...They looked awesome!!

Very nice composition, the colors are beautiful. I did not know the tradition of planting a tree in a temple.
Have a good day.

@Sam: Thank you Sam :) When we visited the Temple, the Gurukkal had already is with many of the village Temples and the watchman and the sweeper lady there did not know the name of the tree.I searched in google, feeding the description of the flowers after coming back and I could not find the tree!! I went into google Temple result !! Then I typed Ball like flowers and long leaves tree and wow... lot of these pictures popped up but no name ! Then I went to ThiruvaNNamalai site to search for some info. and there was a title "Trees of Tiruvannamali and this was there !!! It was as if it was a blessing...( It must have been, as we met in the Temple town a Siddhar( I have been searching for one for the past 14 years ...a real evolved soul) ..and he must have guided my search:))) I know, you must be tinking I am crazy :)))))
